The Enduring Legacy of the Exhibition Catalogue: From Souvenir to Scholarly Monument
The catalogue must serve the specialist (the PhD) and the enthusiast (the Saturday visitor).
An exhibition catalogue is a published text that accompanies a temporary art exhibition. Its primary function is to extend the lifespan of an exhibition beyond the physical duration of the show. However, the format is fluid. We can categorize them into three distinct tiers: EXHIBITION CATALOGUE
- Introduction: A foreword or introduction that provides an overview of the exhibition and its themes.
- Artist Statements: Statements from the artists, providing insights into their work and creative processes.
- Curatorial Essays: Essays written by curators or art historians that provide context and analysis of the artworks and exhibition.
- Image Section: A section featuring high-quality images of the artworks on display, accompanied by detailed captions and information about the artworks.
- Bibliography: A list of sources and references used in the catalogue, providing further reading and research opportunities.
