Remembering Gameloft’s VXP Games: The Java Era on Steroids
- Asphalt Series (Asphalt 6: Adrenaline): This was the crown jewel. Despite running on a device with a directional pad and no accelerometer, Gameloft managed to deliver a pseudo-3D racing experience. The draw distance was short, the textures were muddy, but the sense of speed remained.
- Modern Combat / NOVA: These games attempted to bring the FPS (First Person Shooter) experience to a keypad. The controls were clunky (typically 2,4,6,8 for movement and 5 for shoot), but the level designs were surprisingly ambitious. They proved that "real" gaming could happen on a phone that cost a fraction of an iPhone.
- Prince of Persia & Assassin's Creed: These platformers translated well to the VXP format. Because they relied on 2D logic often disguised with 3D sprites, the gameplay was tight, responsive, and visually cohesive.
- Brothers in Arms: A tactical shooter that managed to create tension despite the graphical limitations.
