Thread fishing line through the top of the tube and attach to the foam piston head; the line should lift the piston smoothly by hand from above (no springs or stored energy).
Route the fishing line over a small, hidden pulley (a craft bead glued to a mount) to a hand-hold around the back of the base so the operator can gently raise/lower the piston.
Conceal the line with fabric or faux cobwebs for effect.
