Visual and audio motifs
While Sailor Moon had moments of pathos, the 2004 series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and especially Gen Urobuchi’s 2011 masterpiece Puella Magi Madoka Magica weaponized the kegareboshi concept. Magical girls—traditionally symbols of hope and light—became "defiled stars" whose soul gems darken with despair until they birth eldritch horrors.
