L'idée du film est née d'une histoire vraie. Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, un homme d'affaires français, est devenu tétraplégique après un accident de ski. Il a besoin d'un gardien pour l'aider dans sa vie quotidienne. Driss Bassiry, un jeune homme d'origine sénégalaise, est embauché pour ce poste. Malgré leurs différences sociales et culturelles, les deux hommes développent une amitié profonde.
