The Mandingo Massacre: A Resistance Against Colonization
3. Chronology of the Incident
Causes and Context:
3. Immediate Precursors (Late 1999)
-
- Guinean Courts: In 2002, a limited number of low‑ranking militia commanders were tried; most were acquitted or received light sentences.
- International Criminal Court (ICC): The ICC declined jurisdiction, citing the lack of a state party referral and the limited scope of the alleged crimes.
- The Insurrections: On several ships, enslaved Africans resisted their enslavement through coordinated uprisings. These acts of defiance often resulted in the enslaved people killing some or all of the crew. The most well-documented case related to the "Amistad," although the details might not align perfectly with the term "Mandingo massacre," it serves as a prime example. The "Amistad" mutiny occurred in 1839, led by Cinqué, an African from the region that might be associated with Mandingo people.
