Poweramp: Why This “Ancient” Music Player Is Still the King of Audiophiles in 2024
Wide Format Support
: Plays almost any local file, including MP3, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, APE, DSD , and more.
- Smart Playlists: You can create dynamic playlists based on criteria (e.g., "Play all songs added in the last 30 days with a rating of 4 stars or higher").
- Rating System: You can rate songs (1-5 stars) within the app. These ratings can be written into the file tags (compatible with other players like MediaMonkey or iTunes) or kept in the Poweramp database.
- Tag Editing: Poweramp has a built-in tag editor, allowing you to fix artist names, album art, or genre tags directly from your phone without needing a PC.
- CUE Sheet Support: It supports
.cuefiles, meaning if you have a single FLAC file representing a whole CD, Poweramp can read the cue sheet and let you skip between individual tracks.
Troubleshooting
- The Problem: Android resamples all audio to 48kHz by default (thanks, Android Mixer). If you play a 44.1kHz CD rip, Android adds junk math to convert it.
- The Solution: Poweramp bypasses the Android mixer via OpenSL ES HD or AudioTrack (direct). It locks the output to the source sample rate.
- The Reality: You need a USB DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) or a phone with a dedicated ESS Sabre chip. On a standard $20 dongle, you won't hear the difference. On a Fiio KA3 or iFi Hip-dac, enabling "Direct HD" removes the Android blanket over your music.
Privacy & Data
: The developer has stated the app has no tracking logic, though standard Google Play crash reporting may apply if enabled by the user. For more details on privacy or to contribute feedback, you can visit the Poweramp Forum . Data Collection - Using Poweramp - Q&A poweramp app
