The Digital Chameleon: Unlocking the Roland JV-1080 via SF2 SoundFonts
Who is this for?
- Roland JV-1080: A legendary hardware synthesizer module from 1994. It uses PCM waveforms and its own proprietary patch format (
.JV1or.SVDfor libraries). - SF2 (SoundFont 2.0): A file format (developed by E-mu/Creative) that maps sampled audio to MIDI. It is a software-based sampler format.
- Go to the Filter page.
- Set the Low Pass Filter (LPF) to 24dB/oct.
- Add +10 to the Q (Resonance).
- Map the Mod Wheel to cutoff. Congratulations: You have just recreated the JV-1080’s "TVF" (Time Variant Filter).
Simultaneously, the rise of the personal computer as a musical instrument necessitated open standards for sample playback. Emu Systems, in collaboration with Creative Labs, developed the SoundFont 2 (SF2) format, which allowed users to load custom sample banks into computer memory for MIDI playback.
