Stronghold: Crusader Extreme – The Ultimate Test of Endurance and Strategy

  • 3. Economic Fracture Points

Upon release, Stronghold: Crusader Extreme received mixed-to-negative reviews. Critics called it "lazy" (reusing assets), "broken" (pathfinding collapses), and "unbalanced" (trebuchets are irrelevant). Players were split: veterans of Crusader hated it for ruining the tactical depth; masochists and LAN-party enthusiasts loved it for the sheer absurdity.

    1. Introduction

    1. The Rat is Your Friend: In the early game, do not build a huge castle. Build a tiny "Rat" square. Put your keep, a well, a granary, and 20 crossbowmen in a tight cluster. The AI pathfinding struggles to swarm small spaces efficiently.
    2. Forget the Sword, Embrace the Lance: Knights (heavy cavalry) are useless in Extreme because of the volume of spearmen. Instead, mass Macemen. They are cheap, fast, and tear through archers.
    3. Economics of Fire: The best way to kill 3,000 units is not with 3,000 of your own men. It is with fire. Invest in three Mangonels (siege catapults) loaded with fire pots. A single volley into a dense crowd can kill 500 enemies instantly.
