As mobile phones became ubiquitous in Tamil Nadu and among the global Tamil diaspora, filmmakers and storytellers shifted from chance meetings and family-arranged introductions to narratives driven by voice calls, text messages, and social media interactions. This study argues that the phone in Tamil romance serves three primary functions: (1) a tool of that bypasses patriarchal surveillance; (2) a space for linguistic and emotional authenticity through colloquial “Tamil Talk”; and (3) a dramatic device for miscommunication and class conflict .
